At the end of the 1960s and early 1970s, Chianti Classico faced legal, commercial, and agricultural challenges. More specialized viticulture improved quality, and Chianti still suffered a low reputation compared to Bordeaux and Burgundy wines from France. The laws slowly changed in Chianti, and a separation between peripheral Chianti and Chianti Classico began to occur. At this time, Sangiovese was the main ingredient in Chianti, but it still had to be blended with other white/or red grapes to improve its drinkability. The quality of the Sangiovese grapes was still not tuned well enough to compete, and the production of pure Sangiovese wines had just started in Montalcino then.

In this environment, the Super Tuscan movement started. Giacomo Tachis and Giulio Gambelli were two genius enologists who worked on different fronts to achieve wines of excellence. While Tachis followed the French Bordeaux school, Gambelli assisted winemakers in perfecting Sangiovese wines in purity, including Brunello di Montalcino.

Super Tuscans set Italian wines on a path of success and recognition, and according to many publications, some claimed the title of the best in the world. Finally, they became so successful that they earned their unofficial category long before any appellation could recognize the value of their philosophy of quality.

A Super Tuscan wine does not follow the laws of its Tuscan appellation. The American and English press coined the terminology, and the new category appeared in the most prestigious restaurants. Critics acclaimed these types of wines. A Super Tuscan is a Tuscan high-quality wine that commands a high price, which generally increases over time.
